The Thai police arrested a Swedish man, wanted by the US authorities and Interpol for allegedly stealing 11 million USD from crypto investors.
Roger Nils-Jonas Karlsson, who operated the investment website, Eastern Metal Securities, was arrested on Friday on Koh Chang – an island, popular with tourists, and is now expected to be extradited to the United States in the following days.
Karlsson and his associates lured gullible investors with promises of 45000% returns from what the scammers claimed to be gold derivatives. Karlsson also promised that if the investment is unsuccessful, the company would return a minimum of 97% of the invested funds.
It is worth noting that Karlsson wanted all clients to invest with bitcoins, a payment method he had hoped to be anonymous. Scammers managed to trick some 3574 clients, who lost roughly 11 million USD since 2013, when the website was established.
After Karlsson decided that they have accumulated enough money he closed the website and left for Thailand.
Karlsson faces over 20 years in prison in the US.
