$1.5 Million Electric Bill in Bulgaria as a Result of a BTC Mining Operation

As a result of an illegal bitcoin mining operation, well over $1.5 million worth of electricity has been left unpaid. This development reached us from the small city of Kyustendil in Bulgaria. The sum of stolen electricity amounts to 2.5 million BGN, the local currency.

The police had confiscated a number of professinal tools used to mine cryptocurrencies. Among the items were mining rigs, computer systems, cooling installations, etc.

After an inspection of the country CEZ Electro company, – the utility company in charge of overseeing the regional electric networks-  it was revealed that an electricity leak had been detected.

Ivailo Iliev, the regional persecutor stated “Preliminary findings reveal that the stolen electricity energy costs well over 2,5 million BGN, which roughly equals the electricity consumption of the city of Kyustendil for a whole month in the summer. The bitcoin farm is closed as the investigation continues. There is a huge quantity of confiscated bitcoin mining equipment”.
This is by far the biggest electricity theft in Bulgaria, and is not an isolated case. There have been cases of illegal bitcoin mining before in Bulgaria.
