In the Canadian province of Ontario, a number of citizens have fallen victim to another Bitcoin scam. The Waterloo Regional Police Service released a statement revealing that the people have been victimised out of CA$430,000 (US$326,649.50).
The police claims that the scammer had been making phone call in an attempt to push for Bitcoin payments. Most notably, the fraudsters were presenting themselves to be from Service Canada, Service Ontario, or Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), and other agencies, some of which are law enforcement organisations.
Those involved with the scam have been calling potential victims and demanding BTC payments or else they would contact the police an issue arrest warrants for the victims. In other cases, the perpetrators well telling victims that their Social Insurance Number was compromised, or that the receiver of the call owes the CRA or Service Canada some sort of payment.
The scam has been going on since 1st of January, the Waterloo Regional Police Service revealed. Around 78 people from the Waterloo region have fallen for these schemes.
