ASIC Servers Cyber Attack Confirmed by Overseer

ASIC just confirmed that on 15th January one of their servers was menaced by a cyber attack. The attack was related to an Accellion software, mainly used for transferring files. The criminals were able to access a document storing server associated with a recent credit license application.

The Aussie regulator had not revealed the methods of the attack, yet it was decent to reveal their fears that the attackers might have viewed some information on the compromised servers.

ASIC was honorable enough to admit that, “While the investigation is ongoing, it appears that there is some risk that some limited information may have been viewed by the threat actor…At this time ASIC has not seen evidence that any Australian credit license application forms or any attachments were opened or downloaded.”

The watchdog also mentioned that the affected servers have been pulled out, with no way to access them. Furthermore, according to the claim, none of their other servers were affected by the attack. The IT team has now focused on investigating the hacked server. The company also noted that it was working with Accellion, a cloud solutions company, to speed the recovery procedure.

Similar attacks have happened in the last couple of years, most notably last year’s New Zealand stock exchange attack, resulting in a total outage for some days.
